The Relationship Between Physical Fitness and Physical Literacy: Empirical Evidence Linking Two Physical Activity-Health Concepts

In young French children, fitness and physical literacy overlap only partly, so testing one doesn't tell you about the other.

What they found
Overall physical fitness was positively associated with self-reported physical literacy (beta=0.52). At the component level, endurance, strength and speed were linked to the physical dimension of PL (beta=0.11 to 0.22), and strength was linked to the psychological dimension (beta=0.18), but no fitness components were significantly associated with the social or cognitive dimensions.
Study design
Cross-sectional observational study in a single cohort of French schoolchildren aged 7 to 8, correlating measured physical fitness components with self-reported physical literacy scores. This sits low on the evidence hierarchy for causal inference, an association study, not a cohort followed over time or a trial.
Methodology
Physical fitness was presumably assessed with performance tests (endurance, strength, speed), a reasonably objective measure, but physical literacy relied on self-report from children aged 7 to 8, an age group with limited capacity for reliable introspection on abstract psychological, social and cognitive constructs, which is a real detection bias risk and a plausible explanation for the null findings in those two domains. Regression coefficients (betas of 0.11 to 0.52) describe cross-sectional association only, with no randomisation, no follow-up and no adjustment strategy described, so confounding by age, sex, socioeconomic status or motor competence cannot be excluded. Single-country, single-cohort sampling also limits generalisability, and without longitudinal or interventional follow-up the direction of the fitness-literacy relationship cannot be determined from this design.
The appraisal
The effect sizes are modest, betas of 0.11 to 0.22 for individual fitness-PL dimension links are small even if statistically significant in a sample of this size, and only the overall PF to overall PL link (0.52) looks moderately strong. The design supports association only, not any causal or developmental claim, so this should be read as hypothesis-generating rather than practice-defining.
The gap
This is cross-sectional, so it cannot tell you whether improving fitness raises physical literacy, whether the reverse is true, or both, longitudinal or intervention data are needed before drawing any developmental inference. Physical literacy was self-reported by 7 to 8 year olds, at that age self-report on abstract psychological, social and cognitive items is unreliable, which may explain why those two domains showed no significant link rather than there being no true relationship. It is also a single French cohort, so cross-cultural generalisation is unproven.
Landmark context
This sits within the broader physical literacy literature stemming from Whitehead's original physical literacy framework, and extends it by empirically testing overlap with the separate physical fitness tradition (health-related fitness testing), a relationship previously assumed but rarely tested with quantitative construct-level data.
What to do Monday
This does not change Monday's clinical practice, it is a paediatric physical education and population health finding, not a treatment or rehab protocol. For clinicians, the takeaway is that fitness testing and literacy or engagement are related but not interchangeable, so screening one does not substitute for assessing the other. For S&C coaches running youth testing batteries, the same logic applies: a child who tests well on strength, speed or endurance is not automatically a child who feels confident, socially included or motivated to keep participating, so if retention and long-term engagement matter to your programme, track those directly rather than assuming a rising fitness score is doing that job for you.
In practice
This is construct-validation research, not a clinical tool, so nothing changes in assessment or dosing on Monday. The useful reminder is for anyone running paediatric testing batteries, a physio doing a general paediatric screen or an S&C coach running an LTAD fitness panel, that a good strength, speed or endurance score tells you almost nothing about the child's confidence, social inclusion or understanding of movement; those dimensions need their own check, not an inference from the fitness numbers. In the S&C setting specifically, if enjoyment and long-term retention in the programme are goals, and at this age they should be, track them directly rather than assuming a rising fitness score is carrying that weight for you. Caveat in applying it: this is one cross-sectional French sample of 7 to 8 year olds with self-reported PL, so don't extend the strength-psychological link, or the social/cognitive nulls, to older youth or clinical paediatric populations without more data.
