How often a paper is cited compared with similar papers in its field.
Field-Weighted Citation Impact compares the number of citations a paper receives with the average for papers of the same type, age and field. A value of 1.0 is exactly average; 2.0 means twice the field average. We use it as one signal of a paper's reach, while remembering that citations measure attention, not correctness.
