Bone Stress InjuryClinical

A spectrum of overuse bone injury from stress reaction to frank stress fracture.

Bone stress injury results from repetitive submaximal loading that outpaces bone remodeling, presenting along a continuum from periosteal stress reaction to complete stress fracture. In recruit and cadet populations it clusters early in a training cycle when load rises rapidly relative to prior conditioning, which should lower the threshold for imaging in this setting.
